Topographic Dormitory

The roof and the floor are a direct expression of the downward sloping topography of the rural Vermont site. The circulation through the dormitory utilizes ramps to create an enclosed, curvilinear pathway for the general public. This organic geometry coupled with floor-to-ceiling glazing allows students and staff to feel connected to the natural landscape, while also offering shelter from harsh winter weather. Smaller private corridors lead to the individual dwelling units, while the bathrooms provide additional shielding from the public pathway. Additional elevation step-downs within the units create even more separation of public and private functions, while clerestory skylights provide southern sun exposure and a vertical expression of the dwelling units through the roofline.
